How we support our PhD students

In our research group, we currently have eight dedicated PhD students who explore a wide range of research topics. For us, it is important that our doctoral students have the best conditions to develop and successfully complete their projects. Therefore, we support and promote their academic development in various ways.

Each of our PhD students have a main supervisor and one or more co-supervisors who they meet with regularly for supervision. The PhD supervisions in our group are structured meetings where the PhD students and their supervisors can discuss for example what methods and research designs to use, or how they can ensure all steps in a project are completed in time.

In addition to participating in regular supervision, our research group also organises several so-called ‘clubs’, groups where our PhD students and early career researchers are supported in collaboratively further developing their academic skills.

A meeting with the Grant Writing Club. At this meeting, the group discussed different aspects that are important to consider in relation to grant application.

📝 Our Writing Club is designed for PhD students and early career researchers who want to sharpen their skills in academic writing and how to get articles published in scientific journals. Led by two researchers, the club offers interactive sessions where participants carry out practical exercises, including:
• Structuring and building strong arguments for why a study should be conducted
• Selecting the most suitable journal for publication
• Understanding the principles of co-authorship

📑 Our Grant Writing Club is tailored for PhD students and early career researchers who are seeking to enhance their grant application skills. The group is led by two researchers and guest speakers are invited to some meetings, such as representatives from Uppsala University’s Research support unit.

📰 In our Journal Club, PhD students and research assistants meet to analyse and discuss scientific articles. Participants take turns selecting articles to review, which results in a wide variety of topics. PhD student Oscar Blomberg is responsible for organising the Journal Club.

The Journal Club gives us an opportunity to stay updated on current research, practice critical analysis, and deepen our understanding of diverse topics related to our PhD projects, says Oscar Blomberg.

Besides being responsible for organising the Journal Club, Oscar also serves as a peer mentor for the PhD students in our research group.

As a PhD peer mentor, I am available for other PhD students in our group who need advice regarding things like our group’s routines, where to find information, or social activities for PhD students.

Whether it is through structured supervision, collaborative clubs, or peer mentoring, we do our best to provide our PhD students with the resources they need to succeed in their research and personal development.
