Biography
I am a professor at the Department of Peace and Conflict Research, Uppsala University, Sweden. My research focuses on the dynamics and resolution of civil wars, including topics such as rebel fragmentation, inclusive peace processes, peacekeeping operations, and Islamist civil wars. My work has been published or is forthcoming in journals such as International Organization, British Journal of Political Science, International Studies Quarterly, and Security Studies. I serve as Associate Editor of the Journal of Peace Research, and I am on the editorial board of Conflict Management and Peace Science and International Interactions.
I am currently the PI of a research project on the role of civil society organizations in peace processes, funded by the Swedish Research Council, and a co-investigator of a research project about mediation in civil war. I have previously acted as deputy leader of the Swedish node in the PAVE project under the European Union H2020 scheme.
I have held visiting fellowships at the Peace Research Institute of Oslo (PRIO), Notre Dame University, Stanford University, and the University of Otago. Previous positions of trust include the council of the Peace Science Society (International), the steering committee of the Network for European Peace Scientists (NEPS), the Research Workshops Grants Committee of the International Studies Association, and the Review Panel for HS-E: Political Science, Peace and Conflict Research, Media and Communication, Swedish Research Council. Since 2022, I am a member of the steering committee for the national research infrastructure Demscore.
