Libraries, reading practices and citizenship

The study of the democratic citizen based on culture is an urgent part of humanistic research and a multifaceted research area that requires an interdisciplinary approach. Within this research area, ALM collaborates with other diciplines, such as gender studies, history, history of ideas and the department of literature.

About the research area

Democracy is constantly debated and maintained through an ever-changing array of institutions, practices and attitudes. At the center of the democratic project is the citizen – individuals and groups who through educational institutions are shaped by the ideas conveyed in cultural representations, and who relate to these ideas in their reading practices. Consequently, they simultaneously act as active and creative co-creators of the democratic the system.

• Everyday information- and cultural practices of different groups
