Sustainable and Resilient Hydrogen Infrastructure: Intermediate Storage and Distribution for Maritime and Road Transport

Enabling large-scale use of hydrogen as a fuel for maritime and land transport

Grundinformation

  • Period: 2025-12-01 – 2029-11-30
  • Funder: Swedish Energy Agency

This project addresses the key challenges of enabling large-scale use of hydrogen as a fuel for maritime and land transport by developing safe, innovative, and scalable solutions for transporting hydrogen to ports, intermediate storage within ports, and refueling of ships and vehicles.

For various ports, the project will estimate hydrogen demand for maritime and road transport, evaluate technical and logistical options for transporting hydrogen from production sites, and explore alternative concepts for intermediate storage, taking into account port constraints and safety requirements.

Advanced thermodynamic simulations will be used to model hydrogen compression, storage, and refueling under realistic conditions. Through cost and safety assessments, the most feasible configurations will be identified. The results will guide ports in their efforts to become fossil-free energy hubs and support Sweden’s energy transition goals.
