Higher seminar at the Department of Economic History

Nikolas will present an ongoing book project that deals with the role of multinational companies in national politics during the second half of the 20th century, an era of accelerating globalization. It focuses on how Swedish business organisations, dominated by a number of relatively large multinational companies, developed and used transnational networks to influence Sweden’s economic diplomacy and the international system in which it played out. The argument is not that these organisations or the multinational companies themselves, determined policy. Rather, the proposition is that a study of these actors over almost half a century, along with the institutions and networks they worked through, and the arguments and visions they articulated, is a fruitful means by which to shed empirical light on the shifting relationship between “the economy” and “the nation” during that era.
