Interview with Ardalan Ghareh Chaie

Why did you choose to study this course/programme?

When I studied other subjects earlier, I often found myself helping my classmates and friends. I discovered that I had a knack for teaching and that pedagogy interested me. And I have always been interested in history.

Have you studied anything else before? If so, what? What got you interested in history?

Economics and literature. I have always been interested in history. It just took me a little longer to realise that I wanted to be a history teacher. I had to try a few other things first to discover what was right for me.

What do you think has been the most fun and interesting part of the programme so far?

Early modern history. The period from the 17th century to the mid-19th century. This period is characterised by both unfamiliarity and recognition. Everything is different and yet so similar to how things are today. It is a time of transition, when people and society are being shaped into the modern era.

What do you feel has been the most challenging aspect of the programme so far?

It's a time-consuming subject, so the most challenging thing has been balancing my studies with my part-time job and family life.

How have you found your first few months as a history student?

I am pleasantly surprised by the quality of the teaching. I have received good support from teachers. For me, it has been quite easy because I find it so interesting and I am used to reading a lot.

What are your goals for your studies?

To become a history teacher and inspire young boys and girls to learn more about history.

What is the best thing about studying at Uppsala University?

Uppsala University is historic. It has impressive surroundings with a long history; history is ingrained in the walls here. It feels impressive for a working-class lad from the suburbs like me to walk around the large halls. In addition, the teachers at the university are highly skilled and the students are very motivated.

Beyond your studies: What do you enjoy doing in Uppsala?

Walking in the beautiful surroundings. Visiting the botanical garden, the tropical greenhouse and the evolutionary biology museum. The city centre feels cosy even though it is quite a large city. I have grown out of student life and now have a family and children, and there are many good playgrounds in the city. Such as Klosterparken and Pelle Svanslös playground.
