Research
Research at the Department of History is characterised both by chronological breadth (in terms of the historical periods studied) and by certain areas of particular expertise. Early modern history is one such area where we study social, cultural, gender, urban and global aspects of the past. Projects include Gender and Work (GaW) and Houses and Social Practices in Swedish Cities, 1600-1850 (HASP). Modern and Contemporary History is another important field of research, with a focus on political extremism, Eastern European history and diplomatic history. The Uppsala Centre for Holocaust and Genocide Studies (UHGS) research environment for modern history, which is successfully combined with peace and conflict research as well as international relations. The Centre has research expertise in the dynamics of violence, memory studies, transitional justice and fascism studies.
