Education at the Department of History

History is the study of the past, including events, people, cultures and societies and how they have developed over time. In history, we seek to understand and interpret past events and processes and how they have affected our world up to the present day. The focus is on political processes in terms of state formation and how people have governed and been governed, economic processes in terms of production, trade and how people have made a living, and social and cultural processes that have structured social order and influenced people's identities.

Teaching at the department focuses on providing you with knowledge of historical conditions and deeper insights into everything from everyday life to global relations. You will also be trained to read and evaluate both historical source material and historical research.

As a history student, you will receive valuable training in skills relevant to present times and society, not least the ability to survey, summarise and present large amounts of information both orally and in writing. Such skills are important whether you want to pursue a career in research, journalism, teaching, research or cultural heritage work.

History is offered as a stand-alone course or as part of programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.
