Swedish for Academics
You are now working at Uppsala University, and perhaps you would like to take on a leadership position in the future. Or maybe you want to know what to talk about when having fika with colleagues. Perhaps you want to better understand how to start and end an email, or you want to master the perfect pronunciation of ”sjuttiosju”. Maybe you simply want to gain a small insight into Swedish culture at Uppsala University, or you hope to feel more confident when giving your first lecture in Swedish.
Whatever your reason, you are welcome to our courses in Swedish for Academics!
Are you working at Campus Gotland?
If you work on Gotland, you can instead audit the courses Basic Swedish which are offered in Visby.
Who can sign up?
The courses are only available for employees (including PhD students) at Uppsala University.
Please note that you are not guaranteed a spot because you apply. Spots in the courses will be given on a first-come-first-served-basis. We often receive more than double as many applications as we have spots, so we recommend applying as soon as the application opens.
If accepted to the course, we will register you in Ladok. Self-registration will not be possible.
Which level should you choose?
Swedish for Academics is financed by the university. Due to the current budget, we are sadly not able to offer all levels of Swedish for Academics each semester.
If you are a beginner in Swedish, you should apply for Swedish for Academics 1.
If you have previous knowledge of Swedish, these are the possible ways to apply for a course at a higher level:
- If you have previously passed a Swedish for Academics course (or a Basic Swedish course as a student) at Uppsala University, you can apply directly for the next level. If you are currently studying Swedish for Academics, you also apply for the next level right away, even though you haven't passed the exams yet.
- If you have previous knowledge of Swedish, you can sign up for the diagnostic test. This is done when you apply for the courses. You will then receive an invitation to complete a digital test which will place you at the correct level. If you apply for the test, it is important that you do the test (or contact us if you are unable to). Otherwise your application will be denied.
- If you have documented knowledge of Swedish, such as SFI, which is less than 6 months old, you can also choose to apply based on this documentation. This option is also chosen in the application. If you choose this, you are responsible for emailing us your documentation before the deadline stated in the application, or your application will be denied.
Important dates
Autumn semester 2026
- 15th of March 2026: The application for the autumn 2026 courses opens at midnight between the 14th and 15th of March.
- 15th of April 2026: The application closes (we do not accept late applications).
- 3rd of August (afternoon) – 9th of August 2026: Diagnostic test in Inspera. The test i digital, takes two hours, and can be done from home at any point during this period. You sign up for the test when you apply for the courses.
- 18th of August 2026: Admissions notices are sent by email to all applicants (make sure to check the email you put in your application, even if you are on vacation).
- 4th of September: Swedish for Academics course start.
