Swedish courses at the Department of Scandinavian Languages
We at the Department of Scandinavian Languages offer courses for students with other first languages than Swedish:
The courses are free of charge and are available at different levels.
Basic Swedish – Swedish for exchange students and international Bachelor's and Master's students
Are you an international student or an exchange student at Uppsala University? Welcome to the Department of Scandinavian Languages, and to our courses in Basic Swedish!
Basic Swedish 1–4 are language courses in Swedish for exchange students and international Bachelor's and Master's students at Uppsala University. We have courses for beginners as well as for those with some prior knowledge of Swedish. The aim is to provide the students with basic knowledge of the Swedish language and of Swedish culture and society.
We offer Basic Swedish courses both in Uppsala and in Visby. In Uppsala, Basic Swedish 1 and 2 are offered every semester. Basic Swedish 3 and 4 are offered most semesters, depending on the amount of applications to these levels. In Visby, the availability of courses may vary depending on the number of students interested in the different levels each semester.
- Basic 1 – Teaching language is English
- Basic 2 – Teaching language is Swedish and English
- Basic 3 – Teaching language is Swedish
- Basic 4 – Teaching language is Swedish.
Application
Application to the courses is open during certain periods before each semester. The dates and application processes varies depending on your student category and on which campus town you belong to.
The courses have a tuition fee for students that are liable for fees. These students can apply to audit the course free of charge, but will not get registered to the course or receive credits. The courses are free of charge for students that are not liable for tuition fees.
Are you not a student at Uppsala University, or did you not get a place on this semester's Basic Swedish course? SFI (Swedish for Immigrants; Svenska för invandrare) might be an option for you. Find out more about SFI, and check if you fulifil the requirements for it, on the website of the Municipality of Uppsala.
Qualifying Courses in Swedish as a Foreign Language, 1, 2 and 3
For those with a foreign prior education who do not have Swedish as their mother tongue and do not yet have qualification in Swedish, there are three courses at different levels: Qualifying course in Swedish level 1, 2 and 3. Each level consists of full-time studies during one semester.
The goal of the courses is to prepare you for studies at Swedish universities. The communicative ability is practised both orally and in writing. Passing results in the Qualifying course provides qualification in Swedish for higher education in Sweden.
The final exam for the Qualifying Course level 3 is a test that is equivalent to the Test in Swedish for university studies, Tisus. Passing results in the Qualifying course provides qualification in Swedish for higher education in Sweden.
TISUS-test
Tisus is recognised by all the universities in Sweden as a statement of eligibility regarding Swedish language proficiency. It is an examination at advanced level and designed according to the expressed needs of students and university teachers.
Swedish in Academic Contexts for Students with Swedish as a Second Language or Swedish as a Foreign Language
Do you want to feel more confident in oral communication in your studies and improve your ability to read texts and develop your writing skills for academic contexts?
The course package Swedish in Academic Contexts consists of four separate courses which allow you to practice and strengthen your linguistic ability to participate in academic settings through analyses, exercises, lectures, seminars and individual feedback.
We offer courses in reading, oral communication and writing in academic contexts. The courses can be taken as a package (30 credits) or separately (7,5 credits each).
Swedish for Academics - SWAC
The department of Scandinavian Languages offers Swedish courses for employees at Uppsala University.

The course is offered as contract education for international researchers, lecturers and doctoral students at Uppsala University.
