We offer three Swedish courses for international students:

  • Introduction to Everyday Swedish
A free, one‑month beginner course for fee‑paying students. Includes 8 lessons and gives no university credits.
  • Basic Swedish 1 (7.5 credits)
A semester‑long beginner course. Priority is given to students who are not liable for tuition fees and to exchange students. A limited number of fee‑paying students may audit for free (no credits) and ask for a certificate of completion if they pass the course. Course plan for Basic Swedish 1.
  • Basic Swedish 2 (7.5 credits)
A semester‑long continuation of Basic Swedish 1 with the same priority and auditing rules. Course plan for Basic Swedish 2.

Both Basic Swedish courses include flexible pre‑recorded lectures and engaging practice sessions on campus.

We do not offer all 3 courses each semester. Please see information on upcoming courses and application dates below.

The Department of Scandinavian Languages also offers the courses Swedish for Academics 1-4 to employees at Uppsala University. These courses, however, take place in Uppsala. If you work on Gotland, you can join the courses Basic Swedish 1 and Basic Swedish 2 which are offered in Visby. After passing each course, your credits will be registered on Swedish for Academics. At the moment, we do not offer the equivalents of Swedish for Academics 3 and 4 on Gotland.

In order to apply, please fill in the application for Basic Swedish above, and we will help you from there.

Learning some Swedish before you arrive

English may be the working language at our international programmes and courses and it may also be sufficient to use English in everyday life, since most Swedes are reasonably fluent in English.

However, good Swedish skills facilitate the start of your new life in Sweden and you may find that learning Swedish will help you to integrate more easily. Read more at Studyinsweden.se about learning Swedish.
