THE DEPARTMENT OF THEOLOGY - WITH KNOWLEDGE OF RELIGION
The Department and Faculty of Theology is one of the four original faculties at the university, and thus goes all the way back to 1477. Normally, faculties have several discipline-specific departments, but the Faculty of Theology, just like the Faculty of Law, only has one.
In Sweden, Uppsala University is the only university with an independent theological faculty.
Sweden's major centre for studies and research on religion
The Faculty of Theology has about 1200 students, and around 100 active researchers, professors and lecturers. This renders us the largest Swedish institution dedicated to research and education on religion. Since 2004, the faculty is housed in House 1 of Engelska parken, and since 2017 we also occupy the newly-built house 22, which also houses the Humanities Theatre.
