Subject History

Hans Hof became the discipline's first professor in Uppsala in 1969, and mysticism was his primary research interest. He was succeeded in 1988 by Eberhard Herrmann. Herrmann was a professor of philosophy of religion until 2011. Under Herrmann’s leadership, research began in two partially overlapping areas: the relationship between religion and science and realism and anti-realism. In 2003, Mikael Stenmark was promoted from lecturer to professor, and in 2012, he succeeded Herrmann as the chair of philosophy of religion. In 2023, Ulf Zackariasson was also promoted to the rank of professor in the discipline.
