PhD studies at the Faculty of Theology
At the Faculty of Theology in Uppsala you will be given the opportunity for an exciting and stimulating time as a PhD student. Seven research disciplines
Research at the faculty is undertaken in an academic environment within seven research disciplines. Each discipline holds regular seminars as well as seminars in conjunction with other research disciplines both within and outside the department. All seminars are open to doctoral students. With this breadth of disciplines and competence and rich array of seminars the department offers a stimulating research environment.
Our research
We focus our research on amongst other issues, classic theological and ecclesiological questions, interreligious relations, assimilation processes amongst immigrants, biblical interpretation and postcolonial studies, the meeting between science and religion, ritual and mental health in a secularized Sweden, and religion and media.
These examples also show the relevance of research to society at large and its importance for a deeper understanding of historical and contemporary occurrences and phenomena.
Apply for PhD studies
Within the Faculty of Theology there are seven research disciplines. Normally, the Department of Theology have an open application term once a year, usually welcoming applications between December and mid February, with admittance 1 September.
When your application comes in to the university it is registered and sent to the department. It is scrutinized by supervisors in the different research disciplines. The faculty board decides about the ranking of the strongest applications.
Content
The research education comprises four years of full time studies for a doctoral degree, or two years full time for a licentiate degree. The first semesters of the education consists of literature studies and course work while the emphasis for other years is research. It is often so that different forms of departmental duties are included, in which cases the education takes five years. Departmental duties might include teaching or administrative assignments.
