It has been proposed that the Primary School Teacher Education Programme: School Years 4–6 and the Bachelor's Programme in Sustainable Development in Industrial Engineering at Campus Gotland be discontinued as of the autumn semester 2025. It is also proposed that the Bachelor’s programme in Business Studies be discontinued in its current form.

The Primary School Teacher Education Programme: School Years 4–6 is one of the degree programmes proposed to be put on hold indefinitely and not admit any new students to Campus Gotland from next autumn. However, both thePrimary School Teacher Education Programme – Pre-School and School Years 1–3 and the Preschool Teacher Education Programme will continue to be offered on Gotland.

There is also a proposal to put the Bachelor’s Programme in Sustainable Development in Industrial Engineering on hold from next autumn. It is proposed that the Bachelor’s programme in Business Studies be discontinued entirely from autumn 2025, and the plan is to develop a new business studies programme. However, there will be a break between the current and the future programme.

Students currently enrolled on the programmes being paused or discontinued will not be affected by the plans and will be able to complete their programmes.

“It is always sad to discontinue programmes, but sometimes it is necessary in order to pursue new ventures. The target of 1,500 students on campus remains. We are planning new ventures in both education and research. However, it is a little too early to discuss any further at this stage. Uppsala University’s commitment to Campus Gotland is long-term and we have a strong collaboration with Region Gotland and the County Administrative Board. We have now also begun discussions with the Swedish Armed Forces,” notes Uppsala University’s Vice-Chancellor Anders Hagfeldt.

At this stage, there is no indication that the University would need to make any staffing cuts as a result of the programmes being paused.

It has previously been decided that the Social Work Programme at Campus Gotland, which was previously offered by Uppsala University, will be offered as a distance learning programme by the University of Gävle from 2024. The Master's Programme in Sustainable Destination Development has also been put on hold and is not accepting new students for this year’s autumn semester.

“Decisions to put programmes on hold are taken at different levels at the University. I apologise that there have been shortcomings in both coordination and communication,” adds Hagfeldt.

Development work is underway under the leadership of the Campus Gotland Board to strengthen education and research.

“It has been ten years since the merger and I look forward to working together with colleagues in Uppsala and on Gotland to develop the range of programmes and courses going forward,” says Jenny Helin, Adviser to the Vice-Chancellor at Uppsala University Campus Gotland.
