Money and life

Money is closely bound up with people’s everyday life, health and opportunities. Here we have brought together research from Uppsala University that shows how economic conditions affect people’s lives – now and historically. Researchers explain how we are moulded by differences in income, education and housing – and propose solutions. New construction in an area can reduce segregation, for example.

“To get a good job, you have to have an education”

Previous research has indicated that there is a resistance to education among young people in industrial towns. A new thesis based on interviews with young people and parents in Söderhamn, Sweden, shows that this is not the case. They have a positive view of higher education and believe continuing with their education can be necessary to get a good job.

The thesis examines what young people in Söderhamn, Sweden, – a place where historically a university degree has not been required to get a job – think about continuing to higher education.

Housing construction breaks down segregation

FILM. Building new owner-occupied flats in low-income areas can help break down segregation there. Research shows that social diversity improves in the area when new buildings are constructed. The Urban Lab at Uppsala University is conducting a major research programme on how different types of housing policy measures have been used to try to change residential areas and the situation of individuals in these areas.

Urban Lab

Quantitative research programme for broad issues: Why do some cities grow while others shrink? Why do some areas within cities have a positive development and others a negative one? How do urbanisation and neighbourhoods affect different outcomes in terms of, for example, economic inequality, the health of individuals and the future of children? What role does local politics play in local development?
