Existential Work and AI
What Happens to Humans When Artificial Intelligence Becomes a Colleague?
About the Project
Today, most people encounter artificial intelligence (AI) in their daily lives. AI is present in many of the apps we use and is a frequent topic of discussion among politicians. The news speculates about a future where AI can perform our jobs, giving us more time for other activities. At the same time, there are warnings about widespread unemployment. We are urged to adapt to a new reality. Perhaps we will need to change careers? Through interviews and workshops with students and young workers, the project investigates how these diverse future visions affect our outlook on the future. What are we afraid of? What makes us anxious? What are our hopes?
Purpose
The purpose is to study the relationship between AI and work in our visions of the future. These visions result from how AI is discussed around us but also influence how AI develops. Existential media studies explore questions about being human in a technological and digital world. By studying how young people believe their jobs will change in the future, the project aims to answer the following questions:
- How do young people envision the future with AI in the workplace?
- What existential needs are present in their future visions?
Research on AI and work is part of the AI Design Futures project.
