PIEZ01 protein model printing
Project overview
The 3D-printed model of the PIEZ01 ion channel was created to aid in project discussions and presentations. The model, which includes both open and closed states of the channel, helps illustrate the significant structural changes required to produce relatively small alterations in the channel pore dimensions. This visual representation enhances understanding of the protein's functional mechanics.
This 3D-printed model was requested by Assoc. Prof. Paul O'Callaghan.
The model continues to play a vital role in discussions with project students and collaborators, as well as inpresentations and lectures. It remains an essential educational tool, providing a tangible way to explain complex biological concepts.

Work description
Technology: MJF
Material: PA12 (Nylon)
The model was designed using structural data from the Protein Data Bank, which provided the coordinates for the channel's proposed open and closed states. It was then virtually colored and sliced for subsequent manufacturing. Post-processing involved sandblasting and cleaning.
