Sörmland Museum has decided to award Dag Blanck, Professor of North American Studies at Uppsala University, Sweden’s biggest history prize, (Stora historiepriset) for 2025.

Dag Blanck has been awarded the prize for his ability to place current events in the United States in their historical context and make them comprehensible to the general public.

“I’m very pleased about the award, which came very unexpectedly. It’s a particular honour to now belong to the same hallowed group as the previous recipients, which includes many of Sweden’s foremost historians,” says Dag Blanck, Professor of North American Studies at the Department of English, Uppsala University.

The jury’s motivation for the award states:

“Based on advanced, scientifically grounded knowledge, Blanck provides commentary and insights that help explain everyday political processes as well as more dramatic and transformative political turns of events in North America. In the media, Blanck’s knowledge in everything from appointments to the Supreme Court and disputed interpretations of the USA’s Constitution to demographic changes and mass shootings is highly sought after. As an expert, and with great pedagogical skill and composure, he places current events in their historical contexts, making them comprehensible to the general public. Dag Blanck has been awarded the 2025 Stora historiepriset for his steadfast determination and exceptional ability to explain what is happening in the present from the perspective of history and knowledge.”

About the prize

The Stora historiepriset has been awarded annually since 1994 by Sörmland Museum in cooperation with the Nyköping Culture and Leisure Committee. The prize is awarded to a historian or other person who, without compromising factual accuracy, has succeeded in conveying knowledge and research results in history to a wider audience, thereby increasing interest in history.

The award ceremony for the prize will be held on 30 September 2025.
