Scholarship
Chapter 7, section 36 of the Higher Education Ordinance, HEO [Högskoleförordningen, HF] stipulate:
For an applicant with funding that consists of a scholarship, funding pursuant to item 1 of the first paragraph is regarded as guaranteed if the level of the scholarship is equivalent to the pay level for doctoral students regulated by a Swedish collective agreement or standard practice in the profession, after deductions for preliminary tax at source according to the tax table equivalent to the average tax rate for municipalities and regions and which is annually published by Statistics Sweden. If the applicant will alternate staying in Sweden and another country, the requirement for the level of the scholarship only applies to the time the applicant intends to stay in Sweden. Ordinance (2019:1014).
Doctoral students who fund their studies with a scholarship have the right to a level of income that is at least the same as the pay level for doctoral students regulated by a Swedish collective agreement after tax. If the scholarship is paid in another currency than SEK, its calculation must take account of the size of the grant and the exchange rate that applies at the time in question.
Conditions for scholarship holders and insurances
Scholarships are often not taxed and therefore do not form a basis for social benefits. Scholarships are therefore the form of funding that offer the thinnest social security net, even though they often provide an income that is larger than a study grant. Remember that a scholarship holder is not an employee of Uppsala University and consequently is not entitled to contractual employment benefits such as insurance cover, statutory holidays or parental leave.
A scholarship is not a basis for sickness benefit, which will affect the level of compensation you can receive for sick leave and parental leave. However, Uppsala University provides, through an agreement with Kammarkollegiet, insurance cover for doctoral students whose studies are funded through stipends. The insurance shall apply when the doctoral student's stipend is reduced due to his/her absence from studies in the case of illness or parental leave.
Insurance
Here you will find information about the above insurance as well as general information about common insurance policies at Uppsala University.
Admitted doctoral students who are registered in Uppdok are covered by general student insurance. Remember that the insurance only applies during the academic term, for travel to and from the school, injury through accidents and in certain cases, illness through contagion.
Faculty duties
Scholarships are normally not payment for work. If a scholarship holder is offered the opportunity to work for the faculty, the scope and remuneration of the work should therefore be regulated in the individual study plan.
