Discontinuation of the The Master's Programme in Social Sciences

The Vice-Chancellor of Uppsala University decided on 10 June 2025 (UFV 2025/708) to discontinue this programme. After the start of the autumn semester 2025, the Master's Programme in Social Sciences will therefore not admit any more students.

As a result of the Vice-Chancellor's decision, the courses within the programme will be offered for the last time as follows:

• the courses in semesters 1 and 2 will be given in the academic year 2025/2026,
• the courses in semesters 3 and 4 will be given in the academic year 2026/2027.
• During these two academic years, you have the opportunity to re-register for courses that you have not completed. To re-register, please contact the department responsible for the course.

Once a courses has been given for the last time, it will be possible to complete an unfinished course for the three following semesters. The form of how so complete a course may vary. For information about the examination opportunities that apply to each programme specialisation's individual core courses, please contact the department for each specialisation (see contact details below).

The Department of Economic History has the main responsibility for the programme and can answer general questions about the closure.

Several of the departments will be starting new Master's programmes that correspond to varying degrees to the specialisations in the programme. It may then be possible to complete courses that continue to be offered within the new programme. For information on this, contact the responsible department.

Programme skills courses

• ”Qualitative Methods in the Social Sciences” – responsible department is the Department of Sociology.
• ”Quantitative Methods” – responsible department is the Department of Statistics. Please note that this course will continue to be gien as it is also taken by other students at the University. To re-register for this course, contact: info@im.uu.se.
• ”Scientific Theory for Social Scientists” – responsible department is the Department of Economic History.
• ”Social Scientific Methods” – responsible department is the Department of Economic History.
