About the course

The course consists of five chapters that cover different topics of bioinformatics, such as database searches, comparative genomics, metagenomics and protein structure analysis. Every chapter contains a theory part and practical assignments with different computer exercises.

Outline for distance course: The course has no mandatory meeting. Questions can be discussed throughout the course with the teachers, who also give feedback and grade the submitted assignments. The course material is accessible via the course platform. In some cases, it might be necessary to search for complementary information from other sources, which are free of choice. The practical assignments can be performed on different operating systems (Linux, Windows, MacOS) and do not require skills in programming or Unix-code.

The course ends with a written exam containing computer-based tasks that are related to the practical assignments of the five chapters. The exam is a distance examination and is held during two working days and a weekend (Thursday-Sunday alternatively Friday-Monday). In order to pass the complete course, all practical assignments need to be graded as 'passed' and at least 50% of the maximum points of the exam need to be achieved.
