About the course
The course provides an introduction to the fundamental principles behind the design and operation of rechargeable batteries, including commercially relevant primary and secondary batteries with a focus on contemporary Li-ion batteries. The emphasis is on the material perspective, where the relationship between composition, structure, morphology and function of both active and inactive materials in batteries is thoroughly discussed. The course also covers aspects of battery production methods, quality control, battery management systems and safety. The course includes practical laboratory work in preparing battery electrodes and cells.
