About the course

The course focuses on the use of music in film and moving images. The course presents different methods for the analysis of film music, technological conditions, historical development and conventions in film music from different periods and genres. Music has been an important component of film ever since it was established as an art form in the late 1800s. In this course, film music as an art form is studied, including its relationships to film technology, narrative, and stage design. Examples of themes that can be addressed are biographies of composers made into films, the music in Ingmar Bergman's films, music in the avant-garde films of the 1920s, and opera adaptations.
