Learning outcomes

In order to pass the course (grade 3) the student should be able to

  • give an account of important concepts and definitions in inference theory;

  • exemplify and interpret important concepts in specific cases;

  • use the theory, methods and techniques of the course to solve statistical problems;

  • express problems from relevant areas of applications in a form suitable for further statistical analysis, choose suitable models and solution techniques;

  • interpret and asses results obtained;

  • use statistical software;

  • present statistical arguments to others.

    Content

    Critical examination of how statistics is presented and interpreted. General views on statistical investigations. Basic theory for point and interval estimation, and hypothesis testing. Correlation and regression. Parametric and non-parametric methods. Orientation about statistical software. Statistical investigation in the form of a project.

    Instruction

    Lectures and problem solving sessions.

    Assessment

    Written examination (4 credit points) at the end of the course and accomplishment of a minor project (1 credit point). Moreover, compulsory assignments may be given during the course.
