Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student should be able to

  • explain the layout of different molecular analysis methods and to understand in depth how the methods work
  • explain how these methods are applied in current research and diagnostics
  • evaluate advantages and disadvantages of the methods
  • independently select appropriate molecular methods for a given application

Content

Molecular analysis methods and their potential use in medicine as well in basic research are studied. The course will in depth discuss how different molecular methods work and the enzymatic mechanisms on which these are based. A number of DNA amplification- and ligation-dependent techniques and applications will be studied, as well as DNA sequencing and protein analysis techniques. Project based lab work are carried out in small groups, each using different methods. The students will plan and execute the experiments independently, and finally present and discuss their results. Site visit at a biotechnology company.

Instruction

Lectures, seminars, lab work, literature exercise, and site visit. Participation in lectures, seminars and laboratory exercises is mandatory.

Assessment

Written and oral presentation of laboratory and literature projects (6 credits) as well as a final written examination (4 credits) must be passed.
