Learning outcomes

The student should obtain basic knowledge in statistics and bioinformatics and should be able to solve simple statistical problems and be able to communicate with statistical experts.

On completion of the course the student is expected to:

- Be able to account for the fundamental concepts within and opportunities afforded by bioinformatics in a wide sense (e.g. analyses of molecular sequence, structure and systems, biomarker discovery, spectroscopy and computerised tomography), focused on biomedical applications.

- Be able to account for and apply basic univariate and multivariate statistical methods in biomedical applications, primarily applications found in bioinformatics.

Content

BIOINFORMATICS

Orientation in analyses of molecular sequence, structure and systems, informatics aspects of biomarker discovery, bioinformatic databases, biomedical applications.

STATISTICS

Basic probability theory and statistics including parameter estimation, hypothesis testing and regression analysis. Orientation in multivariate statistical data analysis: regression, classification and visualisation. Biomedical applications based on bioinformatic methods.
