Learning outcomes

After passing course the student is expected to

  • be able to describe the dynamics of weather systems on a synoptic scale
  • be able to use mathematical models describing the atmospheric circulation and its evolution
  • be able to make a simple weather forecast by using the circulation pattern in the mid troposphere
  • account for processes influencing the development of high and low pressure systems
  • account for the effect that the earth's surface has on the atmospheric circulation
  • interpret and analyse synoptic weather charts
  • be able to apply its knowledge in dynamic meteorology on synoptic weather

Content

The tree-dimensional structure of the atmpspheric circulation from a dynamic and synoptic perspective, baroclinic inatability, the development of front systems, air masses, vorticity and its connection to weather, interaction between land and atmosphere, interpretation and analysis of wheater maps, jet streams, thermal wind.
