General provisions

The content, length and level of the education are regulated by chapter 1, section 9 of the Higher Education Act 1 (1992:1434), by the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100), and by the Ordinance on changes to the Higher Education Ordinance (2006:1053). The course is given in semester 3 in the biomedical laboratory science programme and consists of theoretical studies and practical proficiency training. The course aims to provide students with the bases in clinical physiology and associated methodology required to perform parts in placement training and at clinical physiological laboratories.

Entry requirements

At least 40 passed credits in subjects equivalent to school year 1 in the programme. At admission to a single subject course, older biomedical science education or equivalent skills are required.

Skills and abilities

The student is expected on completion of the course

- independently be able to carry out a diagnostic ECG and a simple spirometry.

- show active participation in work tests

- with reasonable safety interpret the most common ECG and spirometry findings.

- be able to apply safety and hygiene procedures at clinical physiological and nuclear medical work.

- be able to orally and in writing present compiled results of completed studies.

- be able to present in writing clinical physiological and nuclear medical examination methods.

Knowledge and understanding

The student is expected on completion of the course to

- be able to account for the normal function and the pathophysiology behind common occurring diseases and the theoretical background to the studies that are carried out for diagnosis of these diseases concerning the heart and peripheral circulation, the respiratory organs, the kidney and the digestion device.

- be able to account for training effects on different bodies

- be able to account for bases in radio physics, radiobiology, radiopharmacy and radiation protection and have knowledge about hard - and software for registration and evaluation of studies.

- be able to account for clinical applications of radionuclide therapies within oncology and endocrinology.

Evaluation ability and attitudes

- show ability to in a professional way carry out, interpret and present the results of clinical studies on fellow students.

Content

The physiology and pathophysiology and the methodology of the circulatory system, the respiratory system, the urinary tract system and the digestive system

Exercise physiology and nuclear medicine and the methodology. Case studies.

Instruction

The teaching is given in the form of lectures, laboratory sessions, seminars, demonstrations and study visits.

Assessment

Examination is arranged as individual examination. An examination of practical skills is also included. Passed laboratory sessions and other compulsory parts are furthermore required for the grade passed and participation at seminars, demonstrations and study visits.

Students who have received failed on examination has the right to go through the test a further 4 times (= total 5 examinations). Every time the student participates in an examination counts. Submission of so called blank examination is counted as examination.
