Learning outcomes

The course aims to provide knowledge and skills in terms of soil stability and deformation properties, calculation methods for subsidence, pressure, bearing capacity and slope stability, and to describe the technical characteristics of rocks in terms of construction in bedrock as well as construction and aggregate materials.

  • Describe the use of unconsolidated soils in building and construction technology, and describe basic concepts in soil science
  • Describe and classify the bedrock and its structure in terms of its technical characteristics for construction on and in bedrock. Describe the prevalence and use of rock and aggregate material, including processes
  • Analyse simple slope stability in both undrained to drained conditions and describe methods to temporarily or permanently stabilise rock and soil
  • Describe soil behaviour during compression and shear
  • Apply computational methods for the determination of movement in granular and cohesive soils, active and passive pressure against retaining structures and stress conditions in soil profiles
  • Describe the main features of geotechnical design.

Content

Engineering geology: The Quaternary stratas occurrence and use as construction and aggregate material. The Swedish bedrock structure, rock types and technical properties of rock when building in bedrock and using aggregates. Rock reinforcement methods.

Soil science: soil composition and classification. The soil's structural composition.

Rock Mechanics: Rock stress state, dimensioning of reinforcement. Calculations in rock mechanics.

Soil behaviour: Stress conditions in soil. Compression and shear of soil. Movement in soil.

Soil mechanics: Consolidation subsidence, bearing capacity, pressure, slope stability. Field and laboratory methods in soil mechanics. Soil stabilisation methods

Geotechnical investigation and design.

Instruction

Lectures, exercises, laboratory work and excursions. Mandatory attendance of scheduled exercises, laboratories and excursions.

Assessment

Approved laboratory reports and approved excursion report (3 ECTS), approved exercises (4 ECTS), written exam (3 credits).
