Learning outcomes

The aim of this course is advanced knowledge about large-scale protein production in biotechnology industry.

After completing this course the student should be able to

  • Describe the process from start to end, of large scale industrial protein production that fulfils the quality requirements from both industry and regulations from governmental agencies (GLP,GMP), including culturing, purification and analyses of proteins.
  • Use a bioreactor in different ways to produce proteins.
  • Perform different types of protein purification
  • Perform characterisation of proteins using various analytical tools.
  • Plan large scale industrial protein production processes, and organise and communicate these efficiently to a group.

Content

Cell culturing in bioreactors. Protein purification in preparative scale. Protein characterisation by modern bioanalytical tools. GLP (Good Laboratory Practice) and GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice). Laws and regulations. Group project: Planning of large scale industrial protein production processes. Site visit.

Instruction

Instructions are in the form of lectures, seminars, laboratory practicals and demonstrations, and a group project with a written report and presentations.

Assessment

A written test at the end of the course, and/or during the course, corresponding to 5 credits. Laboratory practicals and demonstrations, oral and written presentations of the laboratory reports, and oral and written report of the group planning project together corresponds to 5 credits.
