The course is an optional course and can be taken on advanced level.

Entry requirements

To be accepted to the course there is a requirement to have fulfilled the requirements for Bachelors Degree in Educational Sciences or Political Sciences or three years of studies in a Teacher Training Programme.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course the student will have the knowledge to:

  • describe the present educational system in Sweden
  • describe the development of the Swedish educational system in modern history
  • identify and valuate key issues in the Swedish educational reform policy
  • to describe and analyse one area within the Swedish educational system of the students own interest
  • be able to use key issues in Swedish educational policy in analyses of educational systems.

Content

  • The present educational system in Sweden
  • The modern history and the development of the Swedish educational system
  • Key issues in the Swedish educational policy as equal opportunities, freedom, decentralisation and efficiency
  • The political, economical and cultural conditions for the development of Swedish educational system
  • The descriptive part will be analysed through the planning strategies and reform work which have been used in Sweden during the last 60 years.

Instruction

The instruction consists of lectures, seminars, group exercises, study visits and tutoring.

Assessment

Written paper to be evaluated regarding the amount of analysis made. Grades are awarded according the scale passed with distinction, passed or failed.
