Entry requirements

120 credits with knowledge and skill corresponding to 40 points (60 ECTS) in Earth Sciences including Sedimentology and Stratigraphy MN1 10 points (15 ECTS credits).

Learning outcomes

After completingpassing the course the student should be able to

  • identify and interpret ore minerals and textures
  • evaluate ore deposits, including mineralisation, geological setting and ore forming processes
  • assess the economic potential of an ore deposit
  • discuss the formation and use of peat and clay deposits
  • appraise the environmental impacts and possible remediation of mining ore and quaternary deposits
  • assess petroleum resources from subsurface environments, temperature and pressure and the impact on petroleum systems, from subsurface geological data

Content

The main focus of the course is the formation, composition and distribution of ore deposits. The course also covers the conditions of organic matter deposition and generation of hydrocarbon resources and the formation, occurrence and use of peat and clay deposits. Extraction of non-renewable natural resources is then discussed from the perspective of legislation, environmental impacts, sustainable development and remediation.

Instruction

Lectures, group work, seminars, fieldwork, project work and exercises. Participation in group work, seminars, project work and exercises is compulsory.

Assessment

Written examination corresponding to 7 credits and a practical examination corresponding to 3 credits. Moreover, the compulsory fieldwork, exercises, project work and seminars corresponding to 5 credits must also be approved.
