Entry requirements
30 credits in science/engineering or 30 credits in geography.
Learning outcomes
After completion of the course, the student should be able to
- understand the basic principles of Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
- handle and analyse digital data in vector formats
- choose suitable data and access sources for download
- plan and conduct a GIS project independently
- present and document the results of the study
Content
Basic elements of Cartography, Coordinate systems/projections, geographic data-base techniques. Data supply for GIS: digital maps, digitisation, scanning and measurements with GPS (Global Positioning Systems). Project planning.
Instruction
The course is given in the form of lectures and exercises. The course also includes a problem oriented project work.
The project work, including the definition, solution and preparation of the final report, may be undertaken either individually or by small groups of two or three individuals.
Assessment
The course is assessed with a written presentation of a project (2 credits), exercises (2 credits), and a written exam (1 credit)
