General provisions
The course is offered in term 4 in the Nursing programme. 6 credits of the course are theoretical studies: 3 credits Health sciences with focus on nursing and 3 credits Medical science. Clinical placement consists of 4.5 credits: 3 credits Health sciences with focus on nursing and 1.5 credits Medical science. The subjects are integrated.
The course aims to enable the students to develop their knowledge in nursing care and medical science in public health work and primary health care and a professional and scientific approach.
Entry requirements
Successful completion of the courses from term 1, successful completion of at least 24 credits in term 2, including successful completion of clinical placement and 15 credits from term 3, including successful completion of clinical placement (in total 69 credits)
Learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding
On completion of the course, the student will be able to: describe

Content
HEALTH SCIENCES WITH FOCUS ON NURSING
The course consists of theoretical studies and clinical placement
- public health aims, public health strategies, nationally and regionally
- health promotion work in the community, group and individual level
- pandemic
- theories that explain health inequalities in public health and medical research
- The importance of living habits on health such as alcohol and tobacco, stress and physical activity
- personal quality improvement
- organisation/cooperation between primary care, community health care and hospital care
- telephone counselling
- violence against women, the health care liability in case of violence in close relations
- assessment, planning and implementation of nursing interventions for patients in primary health care
- health risks and work with health promotion and preventive interventions

MEDICAL SCIENCE
The course consists of theoretical studies and clinical placement
- epidemiological methods and concepts
- primary care in collaboration with community care, nursing and hospital care and other community organisations
- different groups of patients in primary care
- organisation and cooperation between primary and hospital care
- health promotion methods and strategies in primary health care
- levels of care within the health care organisation
Instruction
The student shall search, apply and evaluate evidence-based knowledge and in case of nursing - and treatment interventions follow current laws, statutes and ordinances.
WORKING METHODS
Lectures, work in cohort groups, role plays, individual work, seminars and web-based teaching and clinical/practical proficiency training. Clinical placement with organised supervision in primary health care.
COMPULSORY PARTS
Introduction to course, scheduled cohort group meetings, seminars, clinical/practical proficiency training, clinical placement, study assignments with written presentation and examination. Lectures on motivational interviewing, science methodology/epidemiology, quality improvement.
Assessment
Examination is continuous throughout the course in the form of written and oral assignments individually and in groups. The assignments are examined during current course based on the guidelines (date and time), stated by course coordinator/examiner. During clinical placement, examinations are carried out regarding clinical/practical skills and specific theoretical assignments, professional approach, treatment and co-operation ability. All parts and written individual final examination must be approved in order to that the course in its entirety will be regarded as passed.
Other regulations
Student who has failed examination may retake the examinations four times (= in total five examinations). Student who has not passed clinical placement has the right to retake the clinical placement once.
Interrupted clinical placement
A student may fail and be forced to interrupt the clinical placement prematurely if there is a noticeable risk that the student due to incompetence may injure another individual or valuable property if he or she continues the clinical education.
An individual plan should be decided for the student and given to him or her in writing. This plan, to be decided by the programme committee, must state the knowledge and skill shortages at hand, the support the student may receive from the department and also state how and when the assessment will take place. A student is entitled to a maximum of two assessment occasions, however no more than once a year. The student may not participate in the clinical placement again until the programme committee has controlled and accepted the required knowledge and skills of the student.
Decisions on the individual study plan may be delegated by the programme committee to a student welfare committee or equivalent with student representation.
