Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student should be able to:
- Communicate and reason about the role of mathematics in society, including ethical aspects;
- Use the computer programs required in the introductory courses of the program;
- Plan their mathematics studies and reflect on their own learning;
- Use established study techniques to facilitate learning;
- Present mathematics orally and in writing;
- Assess and discuss the quality of their own and others' oral and written presentations.
Content
Ethical and societal aspects of mathematics. Equal conditions regarding all grounds of discrimination. Introduction to current research in mathematics. Study techniques. Introduction to LaTeX. Written and oral presentation techniques.
Instruction
Seminars and lectures. Guest lectures. The course includes subject-integrated communication training with feedback and self-assessment.
Assessment
Mandatory assignment in LaTeX with written and oral presentation, as well as peer feedback (2 credits). Oral and written presentation of group work on the role of mathematics in society (2 credits). Active participation in seminars (1 credit).
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
