Learning outcomes

After having passed the course the student should be able to:

  • evaluate and discuss the implications of wind power integration on future power system planning, operation and control that are a challenge in electricity market conditions,
  • identify and assess the main problems of wind power grid integration and account for contemporary solutions based on current research and operational experience,
  • account for and evaluate economic issues and key engineering features and concepts of distributed generation that are used in grid codes.

Content

This course brings together the engineering and economical aspects of wind power energy technology, power generation and systems integration by highlighting the key principles behind each technology, its state of development and its relevance in the power industry with emphasis on operational and system connection aspects. The integration of new sources of energy like wind power that impact network companies (both distribution and transmission), the owners and operators of the distributed generation units, and other end-users of the power grid and regulators will be explored. This course introduces concepts for quantifying the impact of distributed generation and wind power on the power grid.

Instruction

The course is given as a net-based course. Assignments are submitted to the e-classroom on the Internet and the student is given personal feedback by the tutor. A forum for discussion is also available.

Other regulations

To participate in the course the student will need a computer with Internet connection and Flash.
