General entry requirements

Learning outcomes

Upon completing the course students are expected to

• be able to apply grammatical rules in free and controlled production

• have a good knowledge of English pronunciation

• have both a passive and active English vocabulary and be able to use relevant dictionaries

• be able to express themselves in grammatically correct and idiomatic English

• be able to present a topic both orally and in written form.

Content

The course improves the students' oral and written production by pronunciation exercises and obligatory discussions and presentations. The presentations are based on the course literature within the students' main topic area of study. The course also comprises self-study exercises in English grammar.

Instruction

Group sessions. All instruction and class work is in English.

Assessment

Students are examined in the form of continuous assessment of oral and written assignments. Grades awarded are either pass with distinction, pass or fail.

Other regulations

Attendance is compulsory in all group sessions.

The course may not be included in a degree together with the following courses: Practical English: Oral and Written Production. English A1, or A31.

If the curriculum or the course literature for a course is changed, students have the right to be examined on the original curriculum and course literature on three occasions during the following three terms. After these two opportunities, the right normally expires. There is no limit to the number of times an examination may be retaken.
