Entry requirements

Introduction to Wind Power, 5 credits and a bachelor’s degree of 180 Swedish credits points in engineering, natural or social science.

Learning outcomes

After approved course the student should be able to:

  • explain the physics behind winds and the parameters that set local wind conditions
  • account for the function of a wind turbine from an aerodynamic standpoint
  • describe and analyse metods for calculations and measurement of wind resource potential
  • account for measurements and results of wind analysis for financing of wind farms
  • analyse the use of classified areas in national and regional spatial planning

Content

The course provides an overview of different ways wind resources at a site can be estimated and measured. Meteorology, aerodynamics and energy estimation methods and tools are key illustrative components of the course material, that show how the wind energy can be utilised. In a project work the students compile parts of a full wind resource analysis including a economic calculation. Wind and energy calculations will be performed by programmes such as WindPro and WindSim. Also the use of classified areas, such as national interest for wind utilisation, for national and regional planning is studied.

Instruction

Lectures, seminars, group and field work. Student attendance is mandatory at all scheduled activities.

Assessment

Written hand-in assignments, project assignments and laboratory reports as well as oral presentations 3 credits.

Written exam 2 credits.
