Entry requirements

A Bachelor's degree of 180 Swedish credits in either engineering, natural or social science.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the students will be able to:

  • account for the basic structure of a scientific document and with the contents of a postgraduate thesis
  • write a consistent thesis proposal including all different steps of academic reasoning
  • perform a consistent literature review data collection, organisation & mining and formulate research questions
  • design a methodological research framework as a part of a research proposal and organise a case-study analysis
  • explore ways to perform sensitivity analysis of a model
  • summarise and critically reflect upon research findings

Content

  • Quantitative and Qualitative research methods, statistical analysis, data collection and experimental design
  • Steps of academic reasoning and structure of a scientific document and postgraduate thesis (Abstract, Keywords, Introduction, Literature review, Methodology, Case-Study, Results presentation, Sensitivity analysis, Discussion, Conclusions, References, Appendices)
  • Contemporary applied research: how it is performed, what is a research proposal and project, proposal evaluation and criteria, project execution and management.

Instruction

Lectures, seminars, and group work. Student attendance is compulsory at most scheduled events.

Assessment

The course examination includes individual and group reports and assignments, 5 credits.
