General provisions

The content, length and level of the education are regulated by chapter 1, section 9 of the Higher Education Act 1 (1992:1434), by the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100), and by the Ordinance on changes to the Higher Education Ordinance (2006:1053). The course is given in semester 3 in the biomedical laboratory science programme and consists of theoretical studies and practical proficiency training. The course aims for the students to acquire theoretical basics of pathology, as well as of methodology required for placements in clinical pathology and genetics, and for acquiring more advanced knowledge within the field.

Entry requirements

Admission to the academic year 2 requires a minimum of 40 approved credits in subjects equivalent to year 1 of the program, as well as a maximum residue on one practical test and 2 exams. At admission to separate course require older biomedical laboratory science education or equivalent qualification.

Pathology

On completion of the course, the student should:

  • be able to account for how the changed morphology in different tissues can be used for diagnostic aims
  • be able to describe relevant cellular and molecular changes at certain diseases and how these can be utilised for diagnostic aims
  • be able to show skills in basic and commonly occurring laboratory methodology within pathological activities
  • had trained quality assessment and show ability to simple interpretation of microscopical preparations and other analysis results
  • show ability independently to present facts through oral and written presentation
  • show ability independently to acquire and evaluate facts.

Genetics

On completion of the course, the student should:

  • be able to show skills for the basic laboratory technology within clinical genetics
  • had trained quality assessment and show ability to simple interpretation of microscopical preparations and other analysis results
  • show ability independently to present facts through oral and written presentation
  • show ability independently to acquire and evaluate facts.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

Pathology

On completion of the course, the student should:

  • be able to account for commonly occurring diseases and their prevalence
  • be able to account for the pathophysiological mechanisms behind the origin of completed diseases
  • be able to account for how one classifies tumours
  • be able to account for basic and commonly occurring laboratory methodology within diagnostic pathological activities
  • be able to account for commonly occurring laboratory methodology within pathological activities
  • be able to follow the laws and regulations that govern the laboratory activities in the clinic for pathology
  • be informed about the organisation around logistic and quality assurance on a pathological and cytological clinic
  • have been informed about current research in the area and the relationship between research and clinical application.

Genetics

On completion of the course, the student should:

  • be able to account for the importance for health and un-health of genetic factors
  • be able to account for different main groups of genetic diseases and how these are inherited
  • be able to account for how genetic injuries/specialisations be diagnosed and the basic laboratory technology within clinical genetics
  • be able to follow the laws and regulations that govern genetic activities
  • be informed about the organisation around logistic and quality assurance on a genetic clinic
  • have been informed about current research in the area and the relationship between research and clinical application.

EVALUATION ABILITY AND ATTITUDES

On completion of the course, the student should:

  • demonstrate an understanding of ethical questions concerning handling of human tissue and analysis result within clinical pathological and genetic activities.

Content

Pathology

Treats general cellular pathology, pathological concepts and terminology, body related tumour theory with tumour classification, inflammation, degeneration and aggregation diseases, autopsy, slide preparation, technologies for histopathology including light microscopic analysis, immuno histochemistry, molecular pathology, electron microscopy and cytologic diagnostics and its technologies.

Clinical Genetics

Treats the organisation and inheritance of the genetic make-up, genetic conditioned diseases, advanced knowledge in how molecular biological methodology is used for gene diagnostics and analysis and methods for chromosome analysis.

Instruction

Lectures, laboratory sessions, demonstrations, seminars and study visits.

Assessment

Examination takes place as independent theoretical and practical test. Approved examination is required for the grade passed and also passed seminars, group assignments and laboratory sessions and participation in compulsory parts. If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.

Students who have failed the examination have straight to go through examination further 4 times (total 5 examinations). If special circumstances apply, the programme committee may admit additional examinations. Every time the student participates in an examination counts. Submission of blank exam is counted as an examination.
