Entry requirements

For admission to a new term, passed compulsory parts are required from previous terms and all examinations, except one from the most recent term, must be passed. At re-entry into the programme after a study break, it is required that all courses from the previous terms are passed. The education follows a set course of studies, which implies that the courses should be taken in an established order.

Learning outcomes

After the course, the student should:

  • Be familiar with anatomic terminology of the neck, arm, thorax, abdomen, the pelvic region, back and legs.
  • Be able to explain the organisation of the musculoskeletal system and to understand the structural and functional basis for the mobility and stability of the body.
  • Be able to name and describe the topographic position of anatomical structures in the neck, arms, thorax, abdomen, back, the pelvic region and legs that the student alone have dissected and to explain the function of the structures from an anatomical point of view.
  • Be able to understand and explain clinical findings from acquired knowledge based on dissections of topographic anatomy.
  • Be able to describe the position of the vessels and the nerves in above mentioned body parts and explain which vessels and nerves that supply and innervate the body.
  • Be able to describe common examples of the importance of anatomic variation of vessels and nervous pathways, and to explain the importance of such variations and be able to apply this knowledge in a clinical context.
  • Be able to explain the principles of radiological reproduction technologies and their clinical application.
  • Be able to identify the anatomical structures of the extremities, abdomen, thorax and pelvis on radiological images.
  • Be able to describe the surface anatomy of organs and large blood vessels in the thorax, abdomen and pelvis, and describe the surface anatomy of muscles, large blood vessels and nerves in the extremities.

Content

  • The terminology of the musculoskeletal system.
  • Movement theory of upper and lower extremities and trunk focusing on legs, joints and muscles.
  • Topographic anatomy concerning the neck, arm, leg and back with a focus on vessels, nerves and muscles/fascia and joints.
  • Topographic anatomy concerning thorax, abdomen and the pelvic region with a focus on the abdominal wall, viscera, vessels and nerves.
  • Applied (clinical) anatomy based on the dissected anatomic relations.
  • Diagnostic medical imaging methods: basic knowledge of methodology and interpretation.
  • Lectures in radiological reproduction within thorax, abdomen and the pelvic region.
  • Radiology seminars concerning the musculoskeletal system.
  • Surface anatomy and palpations concerning extremities, thorax, abdomen and the pelvic region.

Instruction

The course is given in the form of lectures, group work in descriptive anatomy and surface anatomy of the musculoskeletal system, group work in surface anatomy of the thorax, abdomen, dissections of the neck, arm, thorax and abdomen, the pelvic region, back, legs and group work in radiology regarding the musculoskeletal system.

Teaching is given after 5 pm and on the weekend before the practical dissection examination.

For a Pass grade in the course, the group work and dissections must have been carried out satisfactorily. Examination consists of an oral test on the musculoskeletal system, an oral practical examination in anatomy in connection with dissection, an oral practical examination in radiological anatomy and a theoretical written final examination.

Students who did not pass the examination have the right to retake the examination at 4 additional occasions (= a total of 5 examinations). If special circumstances apply, the programme committee may grant additional examinations. Each time the student participates in an examination counts as one examination. Submission of a so-called blank examination counts as an examination. The student has the right to request a change of examiner after two failed examinations.
