General provisions

The course consists of theoretical studies and is included in the Specialist nursing programme with focus on oncology care 60 credits. The course consists of 4 credits in health sciences and 3.5 credits in medical science.

Entry requirements

A Bachelor of Science in Nursing, a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy, a Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy or a Master of Science in Medicine.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • describe different symptoms that are common in the palliative phase of a cancer disease as well as how symptom control is achieved
  • have knowledge in palliative care/nursing
  • apply pedagogic models in information giving/teaching
  • apply knowledge of laws, statutes and statutes that regulate the activities in palliative nursing
  • account too as well as concretise the meaning of different central concepts in palliative care
  • identify and reflect on common ethical issues at care in the end of life

Medical Science

  • Symptom control in palliative nursing in oncology treatment and care

Health sciences

  • Ethical issues in terminal care in oncology care
  • Families/close relations' needs and various forms of related support in oncology care

Instruction

Lectures, seminars, web-based teaching and discussion forums. Learning assignments with focus on clinical activities

COMPULSORY PARTS

Introduction to course, scheduled group meetings, seminars, study assignments with written and oral presentation.

Assessment

Examination of the aims of the course is arranged continuous throughout the course in the form of oral and written assignments- examinations individually and in groups. At examination in groups the student shall participate actively with knowledge and reflection.

Passing the course requires:

  • passed individual examination
  • passed active participation in compulsory parts. Maximum 30% of compulsory parts can be replaced by written tasks.

Other regulations

A student who fails an examination is entitled to 4 re-examinations.(= in total 5 examinations). After 5 failed examinations, the student may lose his or her guaranteed place in the programme. If special circumstances apply, the programme committee can admit to additional examinations.

Each occasion the student participates in an examination is regarded as an examination attempt. Submission of a so called blank exam is regarded as one examination.

According to the decision by the Faculty of Medicine (Dnr 3579/98, 3651/98I) the student should hand in a written application to the course director/dean to be allowed to participate in examination a fourth time. Course leader/director of studies should than analyse the situation together with the student and when necessary offer support actions in order to optimise the student's preparations before examination.
