Entry requirements

45 credits completed courses from the first year and 35 credits completed courses from the second year of the Bachelor program in Biomedicine at Uppsala University or the equivalent.

Learning outcomes

After having participated in the recurrent oral and written proficiency training within the Biomedicine Programme and on completion of the course the student should be able to:

  • Identify the most important conclusions in a scientific work and from this analysis put together a scientific summary in Swedish.
  • Identify and put together the most important conclusions in a scientific work and use this to write a popular scientific abstract in Swedish where the work is explained to a given target audience in an understandable and interesting way.
  • Identify the most important conclusions in a scientific work and from this analysis put together a scientific abstract in English.
  • Analyse a scientific work and present it orally in Swedish and English.
  • Analyse a scientific work and use it to put together it as popular scientific presentation in Swedish adjusted to a given target audience.
  • Utilise the support for seeking information that is provided by the university library.
  • Reflect on his/her own ability to present scientific data orally and in writing, and be able to use his/her own experiences from presentations, seminars and group assignments.
  • Discuss ethical issues in an adequate manner.

Content

Presentation techniques with and without technical aids, written presentations, popular scientific presentations and scientific English. Lectures about basic rethorics, writing scientific English, body language and popular scientific writing. Also included is a ethics theme day.

Instruction

Lectures, filmed oral presentations in Swedish and English, submission of a popular scientific text in Swedish and a written scientific summary in English. Ethics seminars.

Assessment

The course is examined through filmed oral presentations and the submission of summaries of a scientific text in English and a popular scientific text in Swedish. Participation in the ethics day is mandatory. To pass the course, the students have to have been present at 75% of the lectures in language progression that are given during the earlier semesters of the Biomedicine programme.
