Learning outcomes

Upon completing the course, students will be able to:

  • identify, analyse and describe sound design concepts used in existing digital games
  • describe the relationship between sounds, mechanics and visuals in digital games
  • source, record, edit, and implement appropriate sounds to achieve specific design goals.

Content

This course introduces various techniques, concepts and tools used for the design and implementation of sounds in digital games. The students start by analysing examples of sound design in existing games. Then they apply what they have learned to source and record, and edit sounds for use in pre-existing digital game projects. At the end of the course students will implement sounds for an existing game project as well as present a project postmortem reflecting on the intentions and outcomes of their soundscape design and implementation.

Instruction

Instruction takes place through lectures, workshops and seminars.

Assessment

The course is assessed through sound design analysis presentations, game deliveries, as well as project presentations.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University´s disability coordinator.
