Entry requirements
120 credits inclusive Cell Biology, Microbiology, Genomics - experimental methods, Macromolecular Machines
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- explain the layout of different molecular analysis methods and to understand in depth how the methods work
- explain how these methods are applied in current research and diagnostics
- evaluate advantages and disadvantages of the methods
- independently select appropriate molecular methods for a given application
Content
Molecular analysis methods and their potential use in medicine as well in basic research are studied. The course will in depth discuss how different molecular methods work and the enzymatic mechanisms on which these are based. A number of DNA amplification- and ligation-dependent techniques and applications will be treated, as well as DNA sequencing and protein analysis techniques. Site visit at a biotechnology company.
Instruction
Lectures, seminars, literature exercise, and site visit. Participation in seminars and literature assignment is mandatory.
Assessment
Seminars and literature assignment ( 4 credits), written examination (6 credits) must be passed.
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
