Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student shall be able to:

  • explain the basic concepts that are used to describe the structure and physical properties of crystalline materials
  • use the models for carrying out simple calculations of properties of solids
  • summarise a laboratory work and its theoretical interpretation in a written report.

Content

Crystal physics: Symmetry, Bravais lattices, reciprocal lattices and Brillouin zones. Diffraction: Theory and experimental methods. Lattice dynamics: Dispersion, heat capacitivity, the Debye model. Electrons: Free electron model, elementary band theory, Fermi surfaces. Semiconductor: Self-conduction, extrinsic conduction and thermal excitation. Superconductivity: Phenomenological production. Magnetism: Fundamental concepts within dia -, para -, ferro and antiferromagnetism. Laboratory sessions and compulsory assignments

Instruction

If so required, the course will be given in English. Lectures, problem solving sessions and laboratory work. Active participation in certain lessons and in laboratory sessions and with these integrated teaching is compulsory.

Assessment

Written examination. To pass the course, also that laboratory sessions and computational problems that are part of the course must have been presented and accepted.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
