Entry requirements

Electromagnetism I. Scientific Computing I.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • describe the physical processes behind sensors,
  • interface analog and digital sensors to a micro-controller using analog-to-digial converters and standard communication protocols,
  • interface the controller to a host computer via RS-232 and WIFI,
  • store the sensor data in databases, present them on a web server and use them in a control system,
  • efficiently communicate results derived from the sensors in seminars and reports.

Content

The physics of sensors and their interfaces. Signal conditioning and digitization. Programming a microcontroller. Interfacing to host computer via RS-232, Bluetooth, WIFI. Data storage and presentation. Guidelines for presentations in seminars and reports.

Instruction

Lectures, guided project work in laboratory.

Assessment

Active participation at lectures and in the laboratory. Written report and oral presentation of the project. Demonstration of a working prototype system.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
