Entry requirements

120 credits including at least 90 credits in Earth Science and 15 credits in chemistry, alternatively, 90 credits in Physics combined with 30 credits in Earth Science. Regional Geology 10 credits is recommended.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • identify and interpret ore minerals and textures
  • evaluate ore deposits, including mineralisation, geological setting and ore forming processes
  • assess the economic potential of an ore deposit
  • discuss the formation and use of peat and clay deposits
  • appraise the environmental impacts and possible remediation of mining ore and quaternary deposits

Content

The main focus of the course is the formation, composition and distribution of ore deposits. The course also covers the formation, occurrence and use of peat and clay deposits. Extraction of non-renewable natural resources is then discussed from the perspective of legislation, environmental impacts, sustainable development and remediation.

Instruction

Lectures, group work, seminars, fieldwork, project work and exercises.

Assessment

Written examination (7 credits) and a practical examination (3 credits). Moreover, the compulsory fieldwork, exercises, project work and seminars (5 credits) must also be approved.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
