Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- formulate a problem based on a given challenge or opportunity within the value chain of raw materials,
- reflect upon and critically evaluate evidence from different sources in the field of raw materials.
- integrate and evaluate competing evidence from technical, scientific, environmental, political, economical, ethical or societal perspectives,
- create possible solutions to problems within the field of raw materials, compare their advantages and disadvantages, and propose a solution based on sustainable development,
- appraise complex issues within the field of raw materials on local, regional and global scales.
Content
The course is based on a number of real cases, dealing with sustainability issues of different parts of the value chain for raw materials. The cases are generally presented by partners in EIT RawMaterials, both companies and universities. Examples of possible cases include sustainable mining in Northern Sweden and the local Sami population, exploration in sensitive environments and potential for green mining.
Instruction
Lectures, assigned reading, supervision of group work and seminars.
Assessment
Active participation in student lead case seminars (2cr) and a written report (3cr).
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
